Have lunch with the Grinch at noon on December 18 at the Cherokee Recreation Center in Woodstock. Lunch is $5 per person and will be followed immediately with photos by a professional photographer for $10 per family (maximum of three people, $2 for each additional person). #24. Visit Santa

There is no shortage of places in Cherokee County to personally deliver your Christmas list to Santa:

In Canton, look for Santa downtown in the gazebo December 4, 11, and 18 from noon to 2 p.m. There will be hot chocolate and treats. The Christmas parade will take place December 11 at 2 p.m.
Holly Springs will have a Christmas parade on December 4 at 3:30 p.m. starting on Holly Springs Parkway at Hiram Way and ending at the old train depot on Hickory Road. Santa will be at the train depot after the parade.
Also on December 4 is Woodstock’s parade, which will start at 5:30 at Highways 92 and 5. The parade will travel north on Main Street to Old Rope Mill Road. Residents are invited to gather in city park after the parade for visits with Santa.
On December 3, Ball Ground’s first-ever Christmas parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Ball Ground Elementary School and will proceed down Gilmer Ferry road. Sounds of the season will be provided by a saxophone quartet and brass ensemble, and hot chocolate and marshmallow toasting will round out the evening.
The Cherokee County Arts Center in downtown Canton will have a visit from Santa on December 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a free event, and children can take pictures with Santa and make an ornament to take home.
Your fur-kids don’t have to left out of the fun as the Cherokee County Animal Shelter at 1015 Univeter Road in Canton is hosting a holiday open house on December 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your pets (must be on a leash or in a carrier) for photos with Santa.

#21. Try The Town Lake Diner

If you’re a fan of the Marietta Diner (and who isn’t?) you must check out the recently opened Town Lake Diner (yes, that’s how they spell it), which is located at 2990 Eagle Drive in the space formerly occupied by Rosie’s Diner. The owner is a cousin to the owners of the Marietta Family Restaurants and the menu reflects the relationship.

Plan to take a little extra time to review the very extensive menu, which includes breakfast served all day – eggs, including one of my favorites, Eggs Benedict, waffles, pancakes, omelettes, breakfast wraps, french toast, crepes – plus burgers, sandwiches (including gyros and souvlaki for the Greek fans), wraps, and salads. The dinner selections include more Greek specialties, steaks & chops, seafood, pasta, chicken, and roast beef, turkey, ham, country fried steak and meat loaf! There’s a children’s menu as well.

If you’ve been to the Marietta Diner or any of the other restaurants, you know about the desserts, and they are available here as well. All are baked on the premises.

Portions are very generous, service is friendly and reasonably fast, and the prices are reasonable. The diner is open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

#20. Go Pignicking

The Cherokee Pignic, which was cancelled last year due to flooding, is back on at Heritage Park in Canton for October 15 & 16. It’s a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned cook-off, and there will be plenty of butts and briskets for tasting, along with children’s activities, live music, and barbecue demonstrations. There will be a children’s Halloween costume contest Friday night, with free admission for kids 10 and under in costume. Both professional and amateur teams will compete for awards, and there will be plenty of chicken and ribs along with the butts and briskets for tasting.

You can get a coupon for $1 off the general admission price of $5 at the festival’s website, where you can also get directions, parking information, and the schedule of events.

#19. Run For Lung Cancer

Get your running shoes on and leave Cherokee County on Sunday, October 10, for the first ever Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation 5k Walk/Run in Atlanta at Manuel’s Tavern in Poncy Highland. “You can sit, sprint, sprawl, crawl, dance, prance, stroll, cajole, saunter, meander, hop, skip, jump or fly to raise much needed funding for lung cancer research.”

A few facts to ponder about lung cancer:

Lung Cancer is the number one cancer killer. It kills more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, melanoma, and kidney cancers combined.
Even though lung cancer causes one in every three cancer deaths, lung cancer research received less than 5% of the National Cancer’s Institute’s budget in FY2007.
For every $9 spent on breast cancer, only $1 is spent on lung cancer.
Lung cancer survival rates have not improved since 1971 due to the underfunding of research.
60% of lung cancer cases are in people who have never smoked or who quit smoking.

#18. The First Annual Woodstock Music Festival

It’s this Saturday, October 2, at the downtown city park and will feature nine bands and two stages. Live music by local bands will be ongoing from noon until 10 P.M.! The festival will also feature arts and crafts, performing arts, moonwalks, kid’s activities, and fantastic food. What a way to wrap up another great summer concert series in downtown Woodstock!

#17. It’s Time For Riverfest

The 26th annual Riverfest will be held September 25-26 in Boling Park in Canton. The festival hours are 10-6 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday, and admission is $5 (free for children under 10); parking is free. The park is located at 1200 Marietta Highway in Canton, next to Cherokee High School.

The festival will feature plenty of arts and crafts exhibitors, a gourmet farmer’s market, a wide variety of food and drinks (including seven new vendors), a kid’s area with loads of games, activities and prizes, and live entertainment. A life-sized western themed playhouse will be auctioned off, too!

This annual event is sponsored by the Service League of Cherokee County (with many additional business and individual sponsors) and benefits the children of Cherokee County.

#16. Visit Cagle’s Corn Maze

The crispness in the air means it’s time to visit Cagle’s Family Farm and find your way through more than three miles of paths through the corn maze. This is the 10th anniversary of the maze, and it gets better every year! This is a fun outing for a group of friends or family and can be combined with a farm tour, the evening hayride and bonfire, or what the farm calls the “Ag-venture” tours (or all three). Check the website for details, times, and ticket prices as well as a map to the farm, which is on Stringer Road in Hickory Flat.

#15. Participate in a Chili Cook-Off

Before you head over to see the talent on display at Cherokee’s Got Talent on September 11 (see #14), stop by Brown Park in Canton (Elizabeth Street across from city hall), where a chili cook-off will be held to benefit the Canton Paw Park. There will also be a car show, old time pickin’ and singin’ (bring your instrument and sit in), Bluegrass music and a karaoke contest hosted by the Hooters girls. A $20 entry fee will let you share your favorite chili speciality, but hurry as pre-registration closes on Monday, 9/6. You can register up to and including the day of the event for $25. Tasting will start around 10:30 a.m.
