Farmer’s Markets

It’s that time of year when we can enjoy seasonal and locally grown produce and other goodies at numerous farmer’s markets around the metro area.  Here is a round-up that I’ve put together of markets in and around our area, including links to websites where possible.

Every Saturday morning from 9 to noon is the Marietta Square Farmer’s Market.  On the square between Schillings Restaurant and the Strand Theater, the market opens for the season on May 29.

On Tuesdays from 7:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Kennesaw Farmer’s Market is open at the Adams Park Soccer Field parking lot.

The Acworth Farmer’s Market is open on Fridays from 7 to 11 a.m. starting May 28 and is located on the upper parking lot on Main Street.

The Canton Farmer’s Market opens June 5 and will be open every Saturday from 8 to 12 noon through September.  Look for it in downtown Canton on Main Street in Cannon Park next to the gazebo.

The Main Street Woodstock Farmer’s Market will be open every Saturday from June 19 to September 18 from 9 to noon.  It will be in the public parking lot on Towne Lake Parkway behind the Woodstock Community Church.

The Riverside Farmer’s Market in Roswell is now open Saturdays from 8 to noon.  Vendors must grow their own produce and it must be grown within 100 miles of the market.  If you’ve been in years past, you should note the new location – at Roswell City Hall at 38 Hill Street.

Waleska joins the fun this year with a farmer’s market on every first Thursday through August  from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.  It takes place on the Reinhardt College campus behind the Waleska First  Baptist Church.

Two events take place at Cagle’s Family Farm on Saturdays:  the Cherokee Fresh Market, sponsored by the Cherokee County Farm Bureau, is open from 9 to noon under the wooden pavilion at the farm at 362 Stringer Road in Hickory Flat.  Cagle Farms also sells its own crops at the Garden Patch Market from dawn to dusk every Saturday.

If you’re willing to venture a bit further, there are three don’t-miss markets in the Atlanta area, all open year ’round:

The Buford Highway Farmer’s Market  at 5600 Buford Highway in Doraville specializes in ethnic food varieties plus fresh produce, a wide variety of fresh and live seafood, and meat cuts you won’t find in your neighborhood grocery store.

The Atlanta Farmer’s Market in Forest Park is one of the largest in the world at 150 acres.  This link provides helpful information about the best hours to visit and which vendors to look for.

The DeKalb Farmer’s Market at 3000 Ponce de Leon in Decatur is truly a world market.   140,000 square feet of fresh produce, fresh seafood and meat, a bakery, every herb and spice imaginable, beer and wine – this one has it all.
